No Smoking on Library Grounds

It’s a shame that the library is not able or willing to enforce its “No Smoking on Library Grounds” rule. Exiting patrons are often forced into a cloud of smoke, not to mention the litter of discarded cigarette butts. One Tuesday there were three smokers sitting on the steps, blocking the entrance.

I can certainly appreciate your frustration with having to walk through smoke to visit the library. Smokers are spoken to and moved outside the iron fences whenever staff encounter smokers there. “Smokers outposts” or ashtrays are available at the edges of the grounds as well as signs to let smokers know to properly dispose of the butts there. You can help us enforce our policy by letting staff know as soon as you encounter smokers on the library grounds. That way we can address it directly at the time that it is occurring.

Sincerely,
Deb Fasulo

Hand-washing

The Surgeon General recommends hand-washing for 30 seconds. How about letting the faucets run in the bathroom for more than 5?

You’re right about that surgeon general recommendation. And faucets that shut off automatically are a must in this public building where they often are left running otherwise. A couple of items on my wish list are lights and faucets that operate on motion sensors so that we can be green and healthy at the same time. Until that can be made reality, give that faucet a second push.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Cordially,

Squeaky wheels

Please oil wheels of book carts regularly.
C.H.

Dear C.H.
I’m sorry you’ve found our book carts problematic. A can of lubricating oil has been made available to the staff to assist with carts that get squeaky.

Soap in the bathroom

Please put hand soap in the Children’s bathroom.

Oops! Sorry it ran out! It is checked daily, but perhaps the room experienced a lot of traffic on the day when you wrote. Since the suggestions box isn’t checked everyday, please let a staff member know right away if you encounter this type of issue so that it can be dealt with immediately.

Sincerely,

Bigger bathrooms

If you have spare funds, the library restrooms need to be renovated or expanded. It is not convenient to have such a small restroom. I have to keep checking back to see if it is free.

New bathrooms are definitely on our wish list too! The amount of use those rooms receive are far beyond what they were when this part of the library was constructed in 1994. We would very much like to expand the rest room facilities in our library and discussions about how to accomplish this have taken place. So far, funds are not available and construction is not scheduled at this time. Until a renovation is possible, I thank you for your patience.

Men’s Room

Great Library! Men’s Room sucks. There’s only 1 toilet, there are often lines and it’s not cleaned frequently enough. Is renovation scheduled?

Thanks for the compliment and I’m sorry you’ve experienced problems with the Men’s Room. The amount of use that the room receives is far beyond what it was when this part of the library was constructed in 1994. We would very much like to expand the rest room facilities in our library and discussions about how to accomplish this have taken place, but no construction is scheduled at this time.

One excellent point that you make is that there are often lines of people waiting to use the room. This high volume of use contributes to the room being difficult to clean during operating hours and also the speed at which it gets dirty again. There is a routine, however:
• Before opening each day, floors are mopped.
• Every day: sink, toilet, glass, metal, plastic, tables & counters are all cleaned; soap, towels, toilet paper refilled;
• Supplies are checked during the day and refilled if needed
• Once a week: major scrubbing
• Once a year: professional tile power wash and resealing of grout.

If you encounter a specific issue needing attention, please do alert the staff and every effort will be made to take care of it as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Deb Fasulo

Lockers in the Library?

To the Director:

It would be nice if there were lockers in the library so one could lock up his/her items while taking a short break (e.g. lunch).

E.E.

Dear E.E.,

I agree that lockers would be a real convenience for some library users. Even so, with the likelihood of forgotten or abandoned items, and the challenges of upkeep and break-in prevention, we are not planning to install lockers at this time.

Cleaning the library

To the Director:

Please have the janitor:
1.) Spray, wipe & disinfect reading booths
2.) Vacuum rugs better
3.) Clean Men’s Room better
Thank you.

Keeping this 45,000 square foot building clean is a tremendous challenge. Until Fall 2008, the Library had two full-time custodians on staff. Because of a City-wide hiring freeze, we are down to only one full-time custodian. While the rugs are vacuumed and bathrooms are still cleaned each day, heavily-visited facility requires more attention than 1 person can provide. Unfortunately, some areas just cannot receive attention as often as we would like. Efforts are being made to restore some custodial help in the library, but in the meantime, please alert the library staff if you encounter a specific incident or area needing attention. We’ll do our best to remedy the situation as soon as we can.

More restrooms, please

Our beautiful library needs another Men’s Room! I hear from lots of people about this problem!

Also, we should have hand sanitizers in each room of the library.

Thank you.

I would love to be able to offer more restrooms in the library! That improvement will definitely be in the plans the next time we’re able to renovate, but for now, an addition of this nature is both a financial and architectural impossibility. Thanks for your patience and enjoy the benches.

As a courtesy during this unusually virulent flu season, hand sanitizer has been placed for use by the patrons at all public service desks. This way the staff can monitor when refills are needed easily. Feel free to visit any of these 5 desks as often as you like!

No Smoking

I am asking that smoking be prohibited near the building. Most places you have to be 100 feet away from a building. I get side affects from the smell and its in my clothes and mouth.

Thank you for your concern. Smoking is actually prohibited on all library grounds and signs are posted to this effect. “Smoker’s outposts” or ashtrays are provided at the edges of the property to encourage smokers to put out those cigarettes. If you see inappropriate behavior of any kind occurring at the library, please inform a staff member while it’s happening and we’ll try to address the situation as it is occurring.

Kind regards,
Deb Fasulo
