Tutors & Students

When tutors are working with their students, why can’t they use a private room or a far removed carrel? I like to sit at a carrel in the main room and I don’t wish to have my math improved! Thanks

We have three study rooms for tutors and small groups, with sign-up at the Reference Desk. Please let the Reference staff know if there’s a tutor or group near you that can use a study room and we will invite them to relocate.

There are times when the demand for study rooms exceeds supply, and small groups have to work as quietly as possible in the AV Annex or in a corner of the Reference Room.

For those who seek a quiet place to sit at any time, the 2nd floor is reserved for silent individual study.

Longer Internet Use

I would like the library to have longer Internet use. I am a student and I don’t have a computer with a word processor on it. If the library were to offer a system of increased Internet use, I would be able to finish more work.

With such a high demand for public computer access, we are obliged to balance providing a turn for everyone who needs it with giving each user enough time.

As it is now, anyone can arrange to have over three hours of computer use each day. (You can call ahead to reserve the two-hour computers and ask any computer-related questions at the Reference Desk.) When it’s busy we do have to enforce the time limits strictly.

We expect to continue adding computers, which may take some of the time pressure off. In the meantime, you can get additional hours at the Charles River Public Internet Center, which offers free Internet access from 12-8 pm Monday through Thursday.
