Great Inter-Library Loan!

I know you probably receive lots of suggestions, but I have none. I love the library and especially inter-library loan! I could not afford to buy all of the books I want to read, and the inter-library loan is a godsend. Every book I’ve ever wanted is available and arrives promptly. I want to thank you for doing this! It’s an amazing system you have.
Sincerely,
A library patron

Dear Library Patron,

Thank you very much for writing to let us know you are happy with your library service!

Our inter-library loan service is possible thanks to the state-funded delivery system; our membership in the Minuteman Library Network; the daily efforts of the Reference staff - especially Marialice - aided by Children’s and Audio-Visual staff; and the efficiency of our Circulation staff, who make sure you get your items when they arrive.

Best wishes and happy reading,
Kate Tranquada

Great Children’s Room, Long wait list

I want to tell you how much my 2-yr-old daughter and I LOVE your library. The Children’s Department provides loads of fun for us. We come to play when the weather’s bad. We love the selection of Patricia Polacco books. I enjoy movies, books and music and the library staff is always helpful.

I do have one sort-of disappointment: When there’s a popular CD, only one copy and 26 holds, I lose interest. I think for NEW items there should be a 1-week borrowing time. Otherwise you’re doing a great job.

Thanks,
Leah & L.A.

Hello Leah & L.A !
Thank you for that bunch of compliments. I’m so glad that you’ve been able to use so many library items and services.

It sure can be tough to wait when there is a popular item that you’d like to borrow. Sometimes the situation isn’t a bad as it looks, though; the catalog can be a little misleading. When you search for an item at a catalog at the library, it automatically limits your search to just the Waltham copies, unless you choose otherwise when you search. The result you see then is all the holds in the entire Minuteman Network for 43 libraries, but only the number of copies owned in Waltham. This paints a confusing picture since other libraries probably own copies too. (Change that box that says WALTHAM to ALL LOCATIONS and you’ll see all the other libraries that also have copies.) The 26 holds you mentioned may actually have 30 copies in the network that could help to fill your request.

Placing a request helps out in another way too. If there are Waltham patrons waiting for items that we don’t have, those items come up on a report to help us decide what items to buy. So, the list may not be as long as you think AND you’re helping the library staff choose materials people want. Request away!

Kind regards,

Bigger bathrooms

If you have spare funds, the library restrooms need to be renovated or expanded. It is not convenient to have such a small restroom. I have to keep checking back to see if it is free.

New bathrooms are definitely on our wish list too! The amount of use those rooms receive are far beyond what they were when this part of the library was constructed in 1994. We would very much like to expand the rest room facilities in our library and discussions about how to accomplish this have taken place. So far, funds are not available and construction is not scheduled at this time. Until a renovation is possible, I thank you for your patience.

Time limit on public computers

time to use all computers should be extended to more than 4 hours a day, its a public library with public access we should be able to do that till library closes not be limited…

Dear Patron,
Thank-you for your inquiry regarding the quota for using the public computers in the library. While I understand your frustration with the limit of four hours per day, the limit is necessary in order to better serve the large number of people who need to use our computers. While we would love to offer all of our patrons as much time as they needed, the demand for the computers does not allow us to do this. We need to make sure that everyone who needs the computer is able to get one and use it for a reasonable amount of time. We are glad to offer laptops to patrons over 18 years of age who have library cards, owe less than $5.00 in fines, and can produce an ID. You can use these laptops anywhere in our building for up to two hours. These laptops have both Internet and printing capabilities and can be checked out twice a day for a total of four hours a day (in addition to the four hours a day on the desktop computers in the reference area.) If the demand for computer use decreases, we will certainly revisit the daily limit, but at this time, we cannot do that.

Thank-you for your comment.

Men’s Room

Great Library! Men’s Room sucks. There’s only 1 toilet, there are often lines and it’s not cleaned frequently enough. Is renovation scheduled?

Thanks for the compliment and I’m sorry you’ve experienced problems with the Men’s Room. The amount of use that the room receives is far beyond what it was when this part of the library was constructed in 1994. We would very much like to expand the rest room facilities in our library and discussions about how to accomplish this have taken place, but no construction is scheduled at this time.

One excellent point that you make is that there are often lines of people waiting to use the room. This high volume of use contributes to the room being difficult to clean during operating hours and also the speed at which it gets dirty again. There is a routine, however:
• Before opening each day, floors are mopped.
• Every day: sink, toilet, glass, metal, plastic, tables & counters are all cleaned; soap, towels, toilet paper refilled;
• Supplies are checked during the day and refilled if needed
• Once a week: major scrubbing
• Once a year: professional tile power wash and resealing of grout.

If you encounter a specific issue needing attention, please do alert the staff and every effort will be made to take care of it as soon as possible.

Parking Meters Accept Quarters Only

Now that the meters accept quarters only, it would be nice to have a change machine in the lobby.

Thank you,
D.S.

Dear D.S.
Since the City’s Transportation Department implemented new parking meters in the parking lot, the Circulation Desk nearest the lot has been kept well-equipped with plenty of extra quarters and is happy to make change for any quarter-less patron. This seems to be working out nicely without having to purchase, power and maintain a machine. Making change is no bother at all; just ask!

Ongoing Book Sale

It would be nice to see books in the ongoing book sale that are not ex-library books.

Thank you.

Thanks for visiting the Friends ongoing sale! Both donated books and weeded library books are displayed in the ongoing sale. As different areas of the library’s collections are evaluated, sometimes extra copies of library books go to the sale. Other weeks there are lots of donations to put out. The selection changes weekly, so keep visiting.

New Movies

There have not been any new movies in the last 2 to 3 months. I am very disappointed in this.

CM

Dear CM,

I’m sorry if you have not found new titles that look interesting to you. I can assure you that between 70 and 130 movies are ordered for the library each month, including feature, documentary, Children’s, blu-ray and nonfiction titles. Please feel free to make recommendations for purchases at the AV desk. OR, on the library’s website, under Common Tasks, there is a link to Suggest a book or other item for the library to purchase.

Perhaps the very best titles were checked out when you visited. There’s a sign posted on the AV Desk each month listing all the new movie acquisitions and this list can be emailed to if you like! On the library website, on the left side, there’s a link to Subscribe to Library News. Simply enter an email address and then choose which lists or newsletters you’d be interested in receiving. Then you’ll be sure to know about all the latest movies the library has to offer, even if they’re checked out.

Lifetime membership in FWPL?

The Waltham Historical Society and the Girl Scouts both have lifetime memberships available for $150. If the Friends of the Waltham Public Library offered a membership like this, it would save me having to renew. That membership fee could grow for the organization in an interest-bearing account.

Interesting idea! The Friends Board will consider it at their next meeting.

Hooked Rugs Display

Dear Library,
To me, the display of hooked rugs is perhaps the most completely satisfying, interesting, and funny of all the great displays you have had here. I wish some signs identifying the artist could be available or some information about the display.

Thanks.
BP

Dear BP,

Thanks for your kinds words about the hooked rugs display! I will certainly pass along your compliments to the artist.

Displayers are supposed to identify their display and we’ll do more to ensure that this occurs.
