Library During COVID

Limited Browsing on our Ground Floor is here! You can now browse Children’s, New Books, Teen, Large Print, Magazines and New AV material (DVDs, audiobooks, & CDs). Only our Ground Floor/Parking Lot entrance is open at this time (Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 8:30AM-4:30PM, Tuesday & Thursday from 11AM-7PM, and Saturday 9AM-12PM).

Here’s what you can do!
  • Browse and check out materials on the Ground Floor: Children’s, New Books, Teen, Large Print, Magazines and New AV material (DVDs, audiobooks, & CDs)
  • Pick up holds.
  • Replace or get a new library card.
  • Use the copier, scanner, and wireless printer.
  • Borrow laptops.
  • Hang out on the #LibraryLawn with masks.
Not Yet:
  • In-person reference or research help. Please continue to call or email. 
  • Computer use (except wireless printing). 
  • Toys/study carrels/desks/tables/chairs are temporarily unavailable.
  • The PIE Room, study rooms, and meeting rooms are closed.
  • Eating and drinking are for outside areas only. 
Please expect: 
  • Mandatory mask wearing by all visitors over the age of 2, regardless of vaccination or medical status.
  • 6ft social distancing. 
  • One-way traffic flow signage. 
  • Capacity limits (there may be a short wait).
  • All programs remain virtual at this time. 
Make it easy: 
  • Please keep your visits under 30 minutes. We may nudge you if there are many patrons waiting. 
  • Please bring your library card or download the Minuteman App, to have your library card with you at all times and check out from your phone! 
  • Check our website before coming! Due to the nature of COVID, things can change.

Returns should be placed in the blue bins outside Monday through Friday from 8:30AM-4:30PM at the Ground Floor/Parking Lot entrance. The book drop can be used after hours. We quarantine all library materials for 24 hours. Please note that due to the very high volume of materials being returned, it may take 2-3 business days to safely check your library items in. Fines will not accrue during these days.

Returns are accepted during our open hours at the Ground Floor/Parking Lot entrance. Returns should be placed in the blue bins outside so we can quarantine all material for 24 hours. The book drops are also open for after hours returns.

Please note that due to the very high volume of materials being returned, it will take us 4-5 business days to safely check your library items in. Fines will not accrue during these days.

Your Questions, Answered

Only the ground floor of the library is open to the public. If you would like materials that are in other locations, you can request items online or call us at 781-314-3425. We will notify you once your materials are ready to be picked up. You may pick up your items at our Ground Floor/Parking Lot entrance Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 8:30AM-4:30PM, Tuesday & Thursday from 11AM-7PM, and Saturday 9AM-12PM. 

Public printing, copying, and scanning is also available. More information can be found here.

You do not need to make an appointment.  You can pick up materials that you have on hold or browse Children’s, New Books, Teen, Large Print, Magazines and New AV material (DVDs, audiobooks, CDs).

Please note that you must wear a face mask while picking up your materials.

We request that you limit your visits to no more than 30 minutes. 

All adults and children over the age of two must wear a mask inside the building at all times, regardless of vaccination or medical status.

We accept returns Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 8:30AM-4:30PM and Tuesday & Thursday from 11AM-7PM, and Saturday 9AM-12PM at the Ground Floor/Parking Lot entrance. Returns should be placed in the blue bin outside so we can quarantine all material for at least 24 hours. If you cannot make it during these times, our book drops are open when the library is closed.
 

All returned material is quarantined for at least 24 hours in a separate room in the Library. After this time, the materials will be checked in. Fines will not accrue during the quarantine time on the items. 

The first floor is not open to the public so desktop computers cannot be used at this time. However, the Library has laptops available to checkout for a 48 hour period. There are laptops with and without DVD/CD drives, so be sure to reserve the correct one. Please read our updated Laptop Agreement Form here.

If you do not know your account login information or if you would like to request an item over the phone, please call us at 781-314-3425. If the item is listed as available at another library, it may take several more days than usual to arrive. After its arrival, the item is quarantined for at least 24 hours before being processed and put on the holdshelf. If the item is very popular, there could be a longer wait list. Please call 781-314-3425 if you would like assistance.

You should not have any fines on your account for returning items to the Waltham Public Library during the current pandemic. When materials are returned, they are quarantined for at least 24 hours before library staff begin checking them in so you will see them on your account for several days after you returned them. Late fines are not being charged, so if you have late fines on your account, please call us at 781-314-3425.
