Why is there a fee for movies in Waltham?

This question comes up from time to time, often from patrons who have used other libraries where there was no fee for movies. Most other public libraries pay for their DVDs with their municipal budget. In Waltham, all entertainment movies are purchased by the Friends of the Waltham Public Library, not the City budget. FWPL is a non-profit library-advocacy organization. All of the proceeds raised by movie rentals go directly back into buying more movies, so the collection is completely self-funded. FWPL funds also provide programming for adults and children, museum passes and other enhancements beyond what our municipal budget supplies.

The small fee allows the Waltham Public Library to provide a fairly large collection to the community for a price which hasn’t changed in 20 years. Want to get an even better deal? Visit on Thursdays when movies are 2 for the price of 1!

You can even sign up for a once-monthly email listing the newest movies.

Happy Viewing!

When I can’t remember which Harry Potter is next… when I want to know when “Toy Story 3” is coming out on DVD… when I’m feeling sad…

Here in the Audio-Visual room we use regularly use outside websites that help us with patrons’ inquiries. Here are 3 that you may want to try at home:

  • To find different series by your favorite authors and see which book or audiobook is next in a series: KDL What’s Next Database
  • If you don’t know the exact title of the movie you’re looking for, want to see which movies an actor has been in, or want to see movies that are similar to your favorite movie: AllMovie.Com
*a companion website, AllMusic.com, exists for music
  • To see the DVD release date for a movie which is in theaters: Video ETA

Everybody Wins @ Friends Annual Book Sale

The Friends of the Waltham Public Library recently held their annual book sale, raising thousands of dollars to enhance and support public library services in the City. Many thanks to all the customers who shopped for bargains at the sale, to everyone who donated books and recordings all year long, and to the dedicated team of volunteers who ran the sale.

Among the dozens of generous volunteers who sorted, shelved, and sold books over the course of the ten-day sale, three deserve particular mention. Book Sale Co-Chairs Betsey Greenman and Parrish Rice masterminded the production, starting their work months in advance. In addition to her countless hours working the sale, Betsey recruited and scheduled all the volunteers who made sure the shelves were stocked and kept the cashier’s table staffed day and night. Jacquie Weekley volunteered behind the scenes all year long, sifting through the piles of donations, sorting the annual sale items from the ongoing sale material. Due to Jacquie’s efforts the Friends have a thriving ongoing book sale in addition to the big annual event.

The Book Sale Committee is especially grateful to the library staff for their help and cooperation. Head of Maintenance Gary Smith sorted and stored donations all year long, then set up the room and supplied the volunteers with the books and materials they needed before and during the sale.

The Friends of the Waltham Public Library is dedicated to supporting strong City-funded Library services, applying its funds to extras that are beyond the reach of the City budget, such as laptops for free computer classes at the library, supplies for the Children’s Summer Reading Program, free and reduced-cost passes to area museums, and free programs such as workshops for job seekers, concerts, lectures and author appearances. A department of the City of Waltham, the library is available to all thanks to the citizens and elected officials of Waltham, who understand the importance of the public library as an essential tool for the educational, cultural and economic development of our community.

Waltham is fortunate to have such strong support for its library, and the library is privileged to benefit from the commitment of the volunteers who made this year’s book sale such a success.

The Bruins season is about to start!

Bruins Logo
Can’t wait for the 2010-11 Bruins Season to start? Me neither!

Here’s a brief update of the offseason…
Cam Neely is now the President of the Bruins organization.
Peter Chiarelli is still the General Manager.
Claude Julien‘s going into his 4th year as Head Coach.
Doug Jarvis was named a new Asst Coach alongside Doug Houda and Geoff Ward. Interesting fun fact about Doug Jarvis: as an NHL player, he holds the record for the most consecutive games played with 964 from October 8, 1975 to October 10, 1987.

Status of the team:
Marc Savard is suffering a recurrance of post-concussion syndrome and is not currently practicing with the team.
Tim Thomas and David Krejci are both playing again after offseason hip surgery.
Andrew Ference is back after 2 hernia surgeries.
Dennis Seidenberg had a tendon in his arm repaired and is currently in the line-up.
Marco Sturm is still recovering from knee surgery and is aiming for a mid-November return to the ice.
Milan Lucic seems up to speed after last season’s ankle issues and
“Big Z” Zdeno Chara declined to have his pinky finger surgically repaired deciding instead to let it heal.
Dennis Wideman was traded in return for Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell.
The B’s had #2 & #25 draft picks and got Tyler Seguin and Jordan Caron.

The boys have a pre-season game coming up on 10/2 in Belfast Ireland against the Giants Selects on their way to the official season opener in Prague, Czech Republic. Belfast Giants Select is a unified team comprised of an All-Star selection of the best of the UK Elite League players from each team. The Bruins will play one exhibition game in Lieberec, Czech Republic on Tuesday, October 5 against HC Liberec at 7:00 p.m. local/ 1:00 p.m. ET.

The Bruins will open their 2010-11 regular season against the Phoenix Coyotes at the O2 Arena in Prague on Saturday, October 9 at 6:00 p.m. local/ 12 noon ET and will play the Coyotes again on Sunday, October 10 at the O2 Arena in Prague at 4:00 p.m. local/ 10:00 a.m. ET. They will return to Boston following Sunday’s game.

Fortunately, the guys will have 4 days off to recover from that crazy travel schedule before playing New Jersey on 10/16.

Other returning players…
Patrice Bergeron
Brad Marchand
Daniel Paille
Mark Recchi
Michael Ryder
Shawn Thornton
Blake Wheeler
Johnny Boychuk
Matt Hunwick
Mark Stuart
Trent Whitfield
Adam McQuaid
and
Tuukka Rask

There are a bunch of new guys still vying for a spot on the team. Click here for the complete roster to date.

New to hockey or need a refresher? I mean no disrespect when I recommend Hockey for Dummies as a great overview of rules and NHL records. This and other hockey books can be found in call number 796.96.

Here’s the 2010-11 Official NHL Rulebook.

So that’s it for a little Bruins update just in time for the season to start.

All together now:

Historical Fiction — October Display

Learn something NEW about the PAST! Travel back in time…10 years…50 years, another century or millennium. The choice is all yours. Cozy up to the past with a historical fiction novel today.
The Circulation Department Display for the month of October is Historical Fiction at the Waltham Public Library. Check out a book or two from the historical fiction display located in the foyer at the main entrance of the library on Main Street.
“A historical novel is a novel in which the story is set among historical events, or more generally, where the time the action takes place in predates the time of the first publication — distinguish and contrast the genre of alternate history. Artists classified as Romantics popularized the genre of the historical novel in the 19th century. Many regard Sir Walter Scott as the first to have used this technique, in his novels of Scottish history such as his novels Waverley (1814) and Rob Roy (1818). His Ivanhoe (1820) gains credit for renewing interest in the middle ages. Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) furnishes another early example of the historical novel.” (from www.wordiq.com. retrieved September 29, 2010)
More recent historical fiction titles include: The Piano Teacher by Janice Y.K. Lee, Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe, Heretic’s Daughter by Kathleen Kent, Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Queen’s Fool by Philippa Gregory, Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. This is to only name a few of the many books available to check out.

Lists and Sites of Historical Fiction

Above mentioned lists can also be found at the display site.

New Computers!

I’m happy to announce that the library has ten new computers! These computers came from a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation so a big thank you goes out to them.

In the past week, I put out seven of the computers, and, as I write this, they are all being used by library patrons.  I’ll finish configuring the final three within the next week or two and then they will become available.

In other computer news,  we will be making three more laptops available to library patrons  in less than a month!  These laptops were purchased by the Friends of the Waltham Public Library so a  big thank you also  goes out to them.
